PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for positioning the light valve of a projection type display device which is capable of easily, rapidly, surely and precisely executing the positioning of the light valve, a display unit and a projection type display device.
SOLUTION: In this method for positioning the light valve, focus adjustment is first carried out and thereafter, position adjustment (alignment adjustment) is carried out. The focus is first coarsely adjusted by coarse adjustment and is then finely adjusted by fine adjustment in the focus adjustment. The position is first coarsely adjusted by the coarse adjustment and is then finely adjusted by the fine adjustment in the position adjustment. First and second patterns are previously set and a specific position is detected by pattern matching and the liquid crystal light valve 25 is displaced by a triaxial table 9 in such a manner that this specific position approaches the preset desired position in the coarse adjustment in the position adjustment. The specific position is detected by edge processing and the liquid crystal light valve 25 is displaced by the triaxial table 9 in such a manner that the specific position further approaches the preset desired position in the fine adjustment.
