The method for preparing a catechol derivative represented by formula (2) (wherein X and Y are each a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, a formyl group, a cyano group, a 1-12C alkyl group or a carboxy group) comprises reacting a 1,2-methylenedioxybenzene derivative represented by formula (1) (wherein X and Y are the same as defined above) with phosphorus pentoxide in a solvent in the presence of oxygen, and then reacting the obtained reaction solution with water and/or an alcohol.
