This method is characterized by comprising brominating a 2-butene-1,4-dicarboxylic acid of formula (I) (wherein, R1 and R2 are each H or an optionally substituted alkyl, aryl or aralkyl) with bromine in the presence of an alkali metal halide or alkaline earth metal halide to obtain the corresponding 2,3-dibromosuccinic acid compound of formula (II) (wherein, R1 and R2 are each the same as defined above).
