Abstract:

PURPOSE: To profitably obtain 3-methylisoquinoline in an one step reaction by reacting isoquinoline with an alkanol in the presence of a metal catalyst selected from iron, nickel and cobalt, the isoquinoline and the alkanol being inexpensive raw materials.
CONSTITUTION: Isoquinoline is reacted with a 1-2C alkanol in the presence of a metal catalyst containing at least one of iron, nickel, cobalt and copper as a catalyst to obtain 3-methylisoquinoline. A nickel catalyst or a stabilized nickel catalyst is preferable as the catalyst. The reaction is preferably carried out in a high boiling point aliphatic hydrocarbon solvent. The solvent is especially preferably a solvent having a boiling point of 150-400°C and a melting point of ≤20°C, such as n-decane, n-undecane, dodecane, cyclododecane or decalin. The reaction is performed under conditions comprising 180-300°C, 5-40kg/cm2 and 0.5-30hr. The 3-methylisoquinoline is important as an intermediate for medicines, agricultural chemicals, dyestuffs, etc.
