To enable the profitable production of (dihydroxyalkyl)amine compounds wherein one alkyl group bound to the nitrogen atom of the amine compound is substituted with two hydroxy groups.
The 4,5-dihydroxypentylamine compounds can be produced by reacting 4,5-dihydroxypentanal compounds whose hydroxy groups may be acylated, with hydrogen and an amine compound having at least one active hydrogen in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst and, if necessary, further deacylating the reaction product. The 4,5-dihydroxypentylamine compound can also be produced by preliminarily reacting a 4,5-dihydroxypentanal compound with an amine compound having at least one active hydrogen, reacting the obtained reaction product with hydrogen in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst, and, if necessary, further deacylating the reaction product.
