To provide a method capable of inexpensively producing an activated carbon having a high mesopore ratio, and to provide the activated carbon.
The method for producing activated carbon comprises: a raw coke forming process comprising converting one kind or a mixture of coal-based heavy oil and petroleum oil-based heavy oil, each containing 2-50 mass% of components insoluble in quinoline, into a raw coke; and an activation process for activating the obtained raw coke. Also, the method for producing activated carbon comprises: a raw coke forming process comprising converting one kind or a mixture of coal-based heavy oil and petroleum oil-based heavy oil, each having a coefficient of thermal expansion of 4.0-7.0, measured by an artificial graphite electrode testing method, into a raw coke; and an activation process for activating the obtained raw coke. The activated carbon is activated carbon originating in coal-based or petroleum oil-based heavy oil and characterized in that the volume ratio of pores each having a pore diameter of 2-50 nm is 20-70% based on the total pores.
