In a method for producing aluminum oxynitride powder, a molding comprising metal aluminum powder and aluminum hydroxide powder is nitrided, and is thereafter pulverized. In the production method, preferably, the content of the metal aluminum powder and the content of the aluminum hydroxide in the molding are controlled to 10 to 30 mass% and 70 to 90 mass%, respectively, and the molding is the one molded under the pressure of 2 to 8 MPa. More preferably, the molding has a plurality of through-holes.
