Abstract:

To provide an easy and simple production method capable of obtaining efficiently and highly selectively a trans-trans form of the asymmetric fluoro-butadiene compound useful as a functional material such as a liquid crystal material, and to provide the novel asymmetric fluoro-butadiene compound, a composition containing the compound, and a liquid crystal electro-optic element containing the composition.

The present invention discloses the method of producing the asymmetric fluoro-butadiene compound expressed by R1-(A1-Y1)l-(A2-Y2)m-A3-CF=CF-CF=CF-A4-(Y3-A5)n-(Y4-A6)o-R2 (1), where R1 and R2 are 1-10C substituted or nonsubstituted aliphatic hydrocarbon groups, halogen atoms or cyano groups; A1, A2, A3, A4, A5 and A6 are each independently substituted or nonsubstituted trans-1,4-cyclohexylene groups, 1,4-cyclohexenylene groups, or 1, 4-phenylene groups, Y1, Y2, Y3 and Y4 are each independently single bonds, -O-, -S-, or 1-4C substituted or nonsubstituted divalent aliphatic hydrocarbon groups; and l, m, n, and o are each independently 0 or 1. [R1-(A1-Y1)l-(A2-Y2)m-A3-] is not same in structure to [-A4-(Y3-A5)n-(Y4-A6)o-R2].
