Abstract:
To provide a method for reducing an organic solvent remaining in a crude CMC, especially the remaining amount of methanol so as to be ≤1,000 ppm, and for preventing the discoloration by carrying out a low-temperature treatment because the CMC is discolored in the treatment at high temperature.
The method for producing the carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) involves a step for removing the organic solvent remaining in the CMC by adding 2-7 wt.% water based on the amount of the CMC to the CMC containing the remaining organic solvent by the heat of hydration. The CMC containing the remaining organic solvent is preferably heated to 40-90°C before the addition step of the water.
