To provide a method for addition polymerization of a cyclic olefin, having high polymerization activity and, even in copolymerization with a silyl- containing cyclic olefin monomer, suppressing by-product of ultrahigh-molecular weight components in the obtained copolymer.
This method comprises addition polymerization of a cyclic olefin-based monomer using a multi-component polymerization catalyst comprising (a) a compound of a transition metal selected from a group consisting of Ni, Co and Pd, (b) at least one compound selected from a group consisting of superstrong acids, Lewis acids and ionic boron compounds, (c) an organoaluminum compound and (d) at least one selected from a group consisting of alkoxysilane compounds, allyloxysilane compounds and cyclic monoolefin compounds except ones having a 1-alkenyl substituent.
