Abstract:

To provide a simple method for producing a diol compound having excellent production efficiency and a high yield.

This method for producing a diol compound represented by general formula (3) includes: a process (process 1) in which olefin is reacted in a two-phase system constituted of a water phase and an oil phase in the presence of (A) a carboxylic acid represented by R-COOH (in the formula, R shows 1-20C hydrocarbon group having one or more halogen atoms) and (B) hydrogen peroxide, to thereby obtain a reaction product containing a compound having a hydroxy group or an acyloxy group introduced into a double bond; and a process (process 2) in which the reaction product obtained in the process 1 is brought into contact with at least one kind of acid selected from (C) specific acids in the two-phase system; wherein the process 2 is performed in succession to the reaction in the process 1.
