To provide an improved method for producing ethylene carbonate, comprising reacting ethylene oxide with carbon dioxide, which enables the selection of mild reaction conditions in a non-aqueous system, the avoidance of the lowering in the selectivity of the ethylene carbonate in a water-containing system, and the skillful treatment of the harmful ethylene oxide.

This method for producing the ethylene carbonate, comprising reacting the ethylene oxide with the carbon dioxide, is characterized by comprising a reaction process for stopping the reaction, when the residual amount of the ethylene oxide in the reaction solution is reduced to a range of 10 wt.ppm to 1 wt.%, an ethylene carbonate-recovering process for separating the produced ethylene carbonate, and an ethylene oxide-treating process for recovering, hydrating and then treating the unreacted ethylene oxide with activated sludge.
