Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a UV light-shielding agent having a high UV light-shielding effect and further having transparency and high whiteness. SOLUTION: This ultrafine metal oxide.cerium oxide complex has an L* value (as whiteness degree) of >=80 evaluated by L*a*b* system, an a* value of <=4 (as an absolute value), and a b* value of <=10 (as an absolute value). The complex is obtained by reacting a cerium salt aqueous solution with an alkali under conditions of <=40 deg.C an a pH value of >=9, mixing the produced cerium hydroxide with an oxidizing agent at <=60 deg.C at a pH value of <8, and then compounding the product with a metal oxide. The complex may also be obtained by simultaneously dropwisely adding the alkali and the oxidizing to the cerium salt aqueous solution under conditions of <=40 deg.C and a pH value of >=9, adjusting the reaction product to conditions of >=40 deg.C and a pH value of <8, and then compounding the product with the metal oxide. The ultrafine metal oxide.cerium oxide complex can be added to a resin composition or cosmetic to impart a UV light-shielding effect thereto.
