To provide a producing method by which the plateau pressure of a hydrogen storage alloy can be controlled by changing the producing conditions of the alloy, particularly changing the sintering time without changing the constituting elements of the hydrogen storage alloy and the weight ratio, atomic number ratio or the like of the elements, i.e., without changing its composition.
This method for producing a hydrogen storage alloy (such as Cag1.33Ni6) includes a mixed powder controlling stage, a compact producing process and a sintered body producing process. In the mixed powder controlling process, two or more raw materials including at least one selected from Ca, Mg and Ni are weighted and mixed, and in the compact producing process, the powdery mixture is compacted. Further, in the sintered body producing process, the compact is sintered at a prescribed temperature (e.g. at 900°C) for a prescribed sintering time. The prescribed sintering time is decided by the relation between the sintering temperature and the plateau pressure in a specified temperature of the hydrogen storage alloy. The longer the sintering time is made, the higher the plateau pressure is made.
