A lactone compound and ammonia or an amine compound are reacted with each other in the presence of a zeolite of an atomic ratio of silicon to aluminum, Si/Al, of ≥5,000 and water to produce amide compounds of formula (IV), wherein R¹ is 3-7C alkylene, and R² is a hydrogen atom, alkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, aralkyl or hydroxyalkyl.
