To provide a method for producing lactic acid by which even a system containing a much amount of cellulose such as garbage and resource waste can be used as a raw material for producing the lactic acid.

The method for producing the lactic acid comprises mixing the cellulose and starch in the presence of a cellulolytic fungus and simultaneously hydrolyzing the mixture to saccharify them, and fermenting the resultant product by using lactic bacteria.
