To provide a method of producing a metallic belt for an automobile, for providing effective fatigue resistance and wear resistance in a few heat treatment processes by using stainless steel more inexpensive than maraging steel.
The production method comprises: a ring formation stage wherein an austenitic stainless steel sheet as the stock is made into a ring shape with prescribed dimensions to form a ring; a rolling stage wherein the ring is subjected to roller rolling into an endless belt; a fluorination stage wherein the endless belt is held under heating in a fluorine based gas atmosphere; and a carburization stage wherein, simultaneously with the fluorination and/or after that, the endless belt is subjected to carburization to form a hardened layer subjected to solid solution strengthening by the cementation of carbon on the surface layer part thereof. Thus, the metallic belt for the automobile exhibiting excellent wear resistance and fatigue resistance because of the formation of the hardened layer subjected to solid solution strengthening by the cementation of carbon on the surface can be obtained.
