PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new method of producing optically active β-formyl-β-hydroxy-α-substituted aldehyde compounds.SOLUTION: A method of producing an optically active β-formyl-β-hydroxy-α-substituted aldehyde compound (2) includes the step of making glyoxal and an aldehyde compound (1) react with each other in the presence of an optically active pyrrolidine compound (3). In the formula each symbol is as defined in the specifications.
