To develop a method of producing a phase difference plate by which a heat-shrinkable film after the shrinking treatment can be separated, while an adhesive layer remains in a good state on a formed phase difference plate.
In this method of producing a phase difference plate, a heat-shrinkable film, having smaller surface tension by 3 dyn/cm or large than that of a thermoplastic film to be adhered, is adhered with an adhesive layer to one or both surfaces of the thermoplastic film, heated to stretch or shrink the thermoplastic film in at least one of the longitudinal direction and transverse direction by the effect of the shrinking force of the heat-shrinkable film, and then the heat-shrinkable film is peeled. The optical member consists of a laminate of the aforementioned phase difference plate and a polarizing plate. The liquid crystal display device has the phase difference plate or the phase difference plate and a polarizing plate on at least one surface of a liquid crystal cell. By this method, the phase difference plate can be adhered to another member, by using the remaining adhesive layer on the plate. The phase difference plate having highly controlled phase difference can be obtained efficiently, and the phase difference due to the double refraction of a liquid crystal cell can be compensated to a high level. The obtained liquid crystal display device is excellent in the viewing angle and contrast.
