To finely identify the production conditions of low mol. wt. phenol derivatives and the products obtained by the high pressure hot water treatment of wood chip biomass, thus contributing to the effective utilization of the wood wastes.
This method for producing the phenol derivative from wood chips comprises cooking a mixture of the wood chips with water alone or alkaline water under high pressure to obtain the solid-liquid mixture reaction product, subjecting the solid-liquid mixture reaction product to extraction with an organic solvent, and then separating the phenol derivative from the obtained oil fraction. The phenol derivative oil fraction consists mainly of 3-methylphenol or 4-methylphenol, 4-hydroxyphenol or 4-methylphenol, 3-hydroxy-2-pentanone and 3-methoxy-1-propene, and the like.
