Abstract:

To provide a wire grid type polarizing element which has resistance in rubbing and suppresses deterioration of optical characteristics, a method for producing the polarizing element, a liquid crystal device using the polarizing element, and an electronic device provided with the liquid crystal device.

The polarizing element includes a base material 12, a plurality of thin metallic wires 14 arranged along predetermined array axes on the base material 12, and a plurality of protective films 16 covering the respective thin metallic wires 14. The protective films 16 cover the tops and both sidewalls of the respective thin metallic wires 14, the width of a second protective film 16b, in the array-axial direction, provided to the top of each thin metallic wire 14 is larger than the sum of the width of each thin metallic wire 14 in the array-axial direction and the widths of first protective films 16a in the array-axial direction at both sidewalls, and the first protective films 16a provided to the opposite sidewalls of the adjacent thin metallic wires 14 form a void 15.
