To provide a method for producing a polycyclic compound including a spiro skeleton by a small number of steps, and a polycyclic compound with a regulated number of ring-constituting atoms (ring number).SOLUTION: For example, as shown in a following formula, α-chloroketone being a raw material is treated in an environment to cause a SN2 reaction and intramolecular aldol reaction, thereby producing a tetracyclic compound which is a polycyclic compound including a spiro skeleton.SELECTED DRAWING: None
