Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a polymer stabilized with polyvinyl alcohol based on a vinyl ester, ethylene and, as necessary, further a comonomer in the form of an aqueous polymer dispersion or a water-redispersible polymer powder by the radically initiated continuous emulsion polymerization and, as necessary, drying of the resultant polymer dispersion.
SOLUTION: The emulsion polymerization is carried out at 40-100°C temperature under 5-100 bars pressure in (a) at least two continuously connected pressurized reactors until the residual monomer content reaches less than about 3 mass% and is subsequently continued at 20-60°C temperature and under <1.0 bar pressure in at least one reactor under atmospheric pressure, wherein (b) the polymerization is initiated by using a redox system comprising an oxidizing component and a reducing component, where the reducing component is at least partially fed to the first reactor in the process.
