To provide a method for producing a sulfonated polystyrene excellent in proton conductivity, to provide the sulfonated polystyrene, to provide a polymer electrolyte film, and to provide a fuel cell having the polyelectrolyte film.
This method for producing the sulfonated polystyrene includes a step for reacting a p-styrenesulfonic acid salt with a chlorinating agent, to produce p-styrenesulfonyl chloride, a step for polymerizing the p-styrenesulfonyl chloride or, selectively, the p-styrenesulfonyl chloride and at least one monomer selected from a group comprising a styrene-based monomer and an acrylic monomer, to produce a polymer, and a step for treating the polymer with an aqueous inorganic salt solution, to form SO3M (M is an alkali metal) groups in the polymer, and reacting the treated polymer with an aqueous acid solution, to produce the styrene-based polymer having sulfonyl groups.
