To provide a method of decomposing a contaminant in the ground water contaminated with a chlorinated organic compound in a short time at normal temperature.
The ground water contaminated with the chlorinated organic compound is purified rapidly by adding copper-containing iron powder thereto and mixing them to decompose the chlorinated organic compound. The copper content of the copper-containing iron powder is 0.1-20wt.% and the ratio of the added copper-containing iron powder to the ground water is 0.1-10wt.%. Each of sixteen kinds of chlorinated organic compounds is decomposed significantly within thirteen days when tested by using the copper-containing iron powder. The decomposition rate is remarkably improved in comparison with the case that iron powder containing no copper is used. The substance produced by the decomposition reaction is a harmless gas such as methane, ethane, ethylene, propane and propene.
