To provide a means for discriminating a compound having the patterns of melanocortin agonist and antagonist activities.

The nucleic acid encoding a mammalian melanocortin receptor, and a recombinant-expressing structural body including mammalian cells introduced with the recombinant-expressing structural body expressing the functional mammalian melanocortin receptor are provided. The method for using a panel of such melanocortin receptor-expressing mammalian animal cells for specifically detecting and recognizing each of the agonist and antagonist for the melanocortin receptor and the patterns of the agonistic and antagonistic activities of the compound for such class of the melanocortin receptor is also provided. Such screening method provides a means for recognizing the compound having the patterns of melanocortin agonist and antagonist activities affecting the performance of giving an effect on or degenerating the metabolisms and behavior, especially ingesting behavior.
