To provide a method for continuously reducing the content of sulfur compounds in a hydrocarbon oil, serving as a gasoline base, over a long period of time by controlling unnecessary reactions such as the hydrogenation reaction of an olefin.
The method is to reduce the content of sulfur compounds in a hydrocarbon oil by changing over flow channels for multiple adsorption tanks. Each adsorption tank has at least one fixed bed of an adsorbent comprising a metal carried on an inorganic oxide carrier. The method comprises alternately continuing steps of: bringing the adsorbent in one of the multiple adsorption tanks into contact with a hydrocarbon oil containing a sulfur compound at 0-300°C; and bringing the adsorbent in other adsorption tank into contact with hydrogen at 100-450°C.
