Abstract:
To provide a method for reducing halogen content in an aromatic compound readily and at low cost.
An organic halogen compound contained in an aromatic compound is made to react with an alkaline aqueous solution at a reaction temperature of 100°C or higher but lower than 300°C, thereby an organic halogen in the organic halogen compound is removed as an inorganic halogen so that the content of halogen in the aromatic compound is reduced. Preferably this reaction is carried out in the presence of a catalyst, the catalyst is preferably copper, copper (I) compound or a mixture of these.
