To provide a method for removing H2S and a mercaptan from a hydrocarbon stream.
The hydrocarbon stream such as an LPG stream is brought into contact with a weakly basic stream such as a sodium hydrogencarbonate stream in an extraction column 2 for extracting H2S and the mercaptan into the basic stream. The basic stream is treated in a reactor 9 containing a microorganism capable of oxidizing H2S to sulfur and the mercaptan to a disufide. The sulfur and disulfide are separated later from the basic stream in separation zones 12, 17, so that the basic stream can be reused. The treated hydrocarbon stream is purified to a point at which it passes a copper strip test, while the content of simple sulfur in the purified basic stream is 0.08 g/l or lower.
