Abstract:

PURPOSE: To epoxidize unsatd. (meth)acrylate by allowing the compd. to react with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of a catalyst or to react with an oxidizer in the presence of heteropolyacid as the case may be.
CONSTITUTION: An unsatd. (meth)acrylic compd. of formula (X is O, S, NH or the like; R1 is H or 1-5C alkyl; R2 is an alkyl chain, a mono- or polycyclic cycloalkyl chain, a heterocyclic alkyl chain or the like and olefinic double bonds are contained in the alkyl chain) is epoxidized by reaction with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of a catalyst such as alkali metallic molybdate and a phase transfer material such as tricaprylylmethylammonium chloride in a solvent such as chloroform at 10-60°C. When R2 is a polycyclic cycloalkyl chain or a polycyclic heterocyclic alkyl chain, the compd. of the formula is epoxidized by allowing an oxidizer selected from org. peroxy acids and hydrogen peroxide to act in the presence of heteropolyacid. Hydrogen peroxide is preferably used by 1.5-3 mols per 1 mol of the compd. of the formula.
