PURPOSE: To reset an original reading density level without rereading an original by storing picture data before binalization at the time of reading an original and preparing binalization data while utilizing it at the time of the confirmation/ reset of the original reading density level.

CONSTITUTION: When the original is read, the picture data before binarization is stored in a memory 8, the picture data is binarized at the set original reading density level, and the binarized picture signal is displayed on a display device in an operation display part 3. When an operator judges that the displayed original reading density level is inappropriate, the operator changes the original reading density level. Next, the data before binarization stored in the memory 8 is reread, binarized according to the reset density level, and displayed in the operation display part 3. Thus, transmission is carried out after the original reading density is set at an appropriate level.
