Abstract:

PURPOSE: To produce sterol glycoside and a long-chain dibasic acid simply and easily at a low cost by separating the sediment of a crude sesame oil using a polar or alkali-contg. polar solvent.
CONSTITUTION: The sediment of a crude sesame oil, produced as a useless by-product in the production process of sesame oil and disposed of as waste, or the insols. in the crude oil is put into a polar solvent (e.g. methanol) or an alkali-contg. polar solvent (e.g. a 1-N NaOH soln. in methanol) in a wt. of 10-100 times the sediment or insols. and heated to 30-80°C, if necesary, under reflux, giving a mixturte comprising a polar solvent phase and an insol. phase. On cooling the mixture, the insol. phase increases. The insol. phase is then separated from the solvent phase by decantation, filtration, etc. When methanol is used as the solvent, the separation is done at 40-60°C. The solvent phase contains sterol glycoside; the insol. phase, a long-chain dibasic acid.
