To provide a low cost method which can stitch correctly and functionally with simplicity and without accompanying capacity deterioration even in a big volume printed article, and to provide a stitching machine corresponding to the method.
The bending device (18) is positioned first in a first position which corresponds to the thickness of the printed products (6) and has a certain distance from the stitching head (19) in the direction transverse to the products travel direction (13). Before a printed product (6) is introduced, its thickness is determined and compared with a predetermined limit value; and if the limit value exceeds, the bending device (18) is brought into a predetermined second position which is farther than the first position from the stitching head (19) viewing in a direction transverse to the products travel direction (13). After the printed product (6) has been introduced, the bending device (18) is moved back into the first position in a direction transverse to the product travel direction (13), and the wire stitch (20) is driven into the printed product (6).
