Abstract:

PURPOSE: To contrive rapid synthesis and improvement in purity and uniformity in particle size of a product powder, by rapidly heating titanium oxide powder or a mixed powder thereof with carbon powder on a forced cooling dish in an arc image furnace.

CONSTITUTION: TiO2 powder or a mixed powder thereof with C powder is placed on a water-cooled copper plate 8 arranged at a position in contact with and just under a focus of an arc image furnace and N2 or Ar gas is passed through the periphery of the powder, which is concentratedly, irradiated with heat rays of light 3 from a xenon arc lamp (10kW) 1 to initiate solid-gas or solid reaction. Thereby the aimed product can be rapidly synthesized for a time of one over several tens as compared with that of a conventional method. The molecular composition of the solid solution of the reaction product can be expressed by the formula TiCxN1-x based on the ratio of Ti, N and C and x is mol fraction represents three cases of x=0, x=1 and 0<x<1. However, since x is not 1, i.e. N is not 0 in N2 gas atmosphere, Ar gas atmosphere is used.
