PURPOSE: To allow more positive detection of irregular defect by detecting level variation of image signal outputted from an image sensor as compared with an image signal obtained from surrounding painted surface.
CONSTITUTION: A lens sheet in a surface emitter 10 emits light in the form of a light emission plane of gradation check pattern having transmittance varying gradually from the central part toward the peripheral part of each shaded part. Regular reflection light scattered from a wide light emission plane impinges on an image sensor, i.e., a TV camera 11, and a painted face area within an imaging range is presented on the screen of an image display 12. Emitting position of gradation scattering light impinging on a same position of the image sensor is displaced depending on the inclination angle of an irregular defect. The position for emitting a gradation scattering light in the direction susceptible to the shape is most sensitive to the displacement. Consequently, the image signal level of irregular defect varies from the image signal level of surrounding painted face 13 sensitively depending on the gradation.
