Abstract:

To provide an enhanced authentication method, recording device side authentication apparatus and recording device writable/readable only via an authenticated recording medium in a data processing apparatus having the recording medium on which data can be recorded.

The authentication method to ensure permissible recording of data and/or reproducing of data to/from a recording device in a data processing apparatus having a host to process data and the recording device to store and reproduce data processed or to be processed by the host, includes the steps of: authenticating the recording device via the host; authenticating the host via the recording device; and performing recording of data to and/or reproduction of data from the recording device upon determining that the host and the recording device have authenticated each other in the authentication step.
