Process for the surface treatment of a continuously cast steel product comprises cooling a part of a surface of the metallic product to a defined temperature reduction of the surface. An Independent claim is also included for an apparatus for carrying out the surface treatment of a continuously cast steel product comprising a surface treatment device (6) connected to a cooling device (7) which in turn is connected to an inspection device (8) for detecting errors in surface regions.
