Abstract:
To provide an efficient method to remove and isolate short chain fatty acids from hydrocarbons that are produced upon the heating of a fatty acid resource.SOLUTION: A method for producing hydrocarbons from free fatty acid includes the steps of: (a) heating the free fatty acid to produce a first composition comprising the hydrocarbons and at least one short chain free fatty acid; and (b) separating the short chain free fatty acid from the first composition to produce a final hydrocarbon composition, wherein the separating step includes a step including one of the steps of: (i) contacting the first hydrocarbon composition with an adsorbent, which is silica gel or PSA silica, and using methanol or dry ice and/or liquid CO2 to collect the short chain free fatty acid; and (ii) contacting the first hydrocarbon composition with an anion exchange resin.SELECTED DRAWING: None
