Abstract:
To provide methods for producing mercaptans from disulfides and hydrogen by enzymatic catalysis, in particular, methyl mercaptan from dimethyl disulfide and hydrogen.SOLUTION: Disclosed is a method for preparing a mercaptan of formula R-SH, comprising the steps of: a) preparing a mixture of: 1) a disulfide of formula R-S-S-R'; 2) a catalytic amount of a thiol-containing amino acid or thiol-containing peptide; 3) a catalytic amount of an enzyme that catalyzes reduction of a disulfide link formed between two equivalents of the thiol-containing amino acids or two equivalents of thiol-containing peptides; and 4) a catalytic amount of an enzyme that catalyzes reduction of hydrogen; b) adding hydrogen; c) conducting the enzymatic reaction; d) harvesting mercaptans of the formula R-SH and R'-SH; and e) optionally separating or purifying the mercaptan of the formula R-SH and/or the mercaptan of the formula R'-SH.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
