PURPOSE: The titled clathrate, obtained by including shikonin in methylated cyclodextrin, having improved stability of the shikonin to light and heat and usable in a stable state for medicines, cosmetics, foods, etc.

CONSTITUTION: Shikonin or a derivative thereof extracted from a rhizome of Lithosperum officinale L var. erythrorhizon Maxim. or cells thereof obtained by a method for cultivating a callus thereof, e.g. acetylshikonin, isobutylshikonin, etc., is added to a saturated aqueous solution of methylated cyclodextrin, prepared by methylating cyclodextrin and expressed by the formula (n is 6W9; at least one of 3n A is CH3 and the rest are H), preferably methylated β- cyclodextrin mixture, containing preferably ≥50wt% methylated β-cyclodextrin having 8W11 ether substitution degree and having 8.0W11.0 weight-average substitution degree in an amount of 1/2W20 times based on the shikonin to afford the aimed clathrate by a saturated aqueous solution method, etc.
