To provide a mode-evolution compound converter which has a wide bandwidth and can be easily manufactured.
The mode-evolution compound converter is disclosed which processes an optical signal including a first component having a fundamental transverse magnetic (TM) mode and a second component having a fundamental transverse electric (TE) mode. The mode-evolution compound converter comprises a set of converters connected so as to form this compound converter, each of which is selected from a group including a polarization converter, a spatial mode converter, and a combination of them. The polarization converter at least converts a polarization mode of at least one component of the optical signal, and the spatial mode converter at least converts a spatial mode number of at least one component of the optical signal.
