To provide a method of desulfurization, attached directly to a fuel cell, performing the desulfurization of its fuel as a part of the fuel cell system and capable of directly supplying the fuel as a fuel for a PEM fuel cell.
This method of desulfurization comprises bringing a hydrocarbon-based fuel containing sulfur in contact with hydrogen in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst at 300-500°F temperature, 50-500 psig total pressure and 0.5-10 hr-1 space velocity for a sufficient time to convert up to 95% thiophene presenting in the fuel, and also bringing the above hydrogenation- treated hydrocarbon-based fuel in contact with a solid adsorbent or a liquid extracting agent selected from reducing the sulfur compound remaining in the above fuel to ≤5.0 ppm, recovering the hydrocarbon-based fuel reduced with the sulfur content and supplying it as the fuel for the PEM fuel cell.
