Abstract:
To provide, in a graphite product having an arbitrarily controlled thermal expansion coefficient, a modified pitch and method for producing the same that can be used as a raw material for coke having a higher hardness.SOLUTION: The problem is solved by: a modified pitch in which the quinoline insoluble content is 50 to 99 wt.%, the toluene insoluble content is 60 to 99 wt.%, and β component ([toluene insoluble content]-[quinoline insoluble content]) is 10 wt.% or less; and further, a method for producing said modified pitch, in which a coal tar pitch having a quinoline insoluble content of less than 1 wt.% is heated in the presence of oxygen-containing gas.SELECTED DRAWING: None
