Title:
MODULATING ELEMENT OF LIQUID CRYSTAL LIGHT
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPS60260923
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:

PURPOSE: To improve the responsiveness and contrast of a liquid crystal, by installing transparent electrodes in the facing surfaces of two transparent substrates facing each other with polarizers at their outer surfaces and forming an insulating array controlling layer on each of the facing surfaces, and then, putting ferrodielectric liquid crystals between them.

CONSTITUTION: The liquid crystal light modulating element of this invention is composed of two transparent substrates 2 and 2 facing each other, transparent electrodes 3 and 3 respectively installed in each of the facing surfaces of the substrates 2 and 2, transparent insulating array control layers 4 and 4 which are installed in each of the facing surfaces of the electrodes 3 and 3, have an insulating property, and array near liquid crystal molecules 10 in the direction parallel with the surfaces of the substrates 2 and 2, a ferrodielectric liquid crystal phase 1 put between the control layers 4 and 4, and polarizers 8 and 8 provided at the outer surfaces of the substrates 2 and 2. It is desirable to use a polyimidic high polymer resin, etc., to form the insulating array control layers 4 and 4. When such a constitution is used, ferrodielectric liquid crystal molecules can be arrayed uniformly and easily in parallel with each other without impressing any high electric field and a high contrast and responsiveness can be obtained.
