Abstract:
PURPOSE:To improve the barrier properties to a gas and org. solvent by melt mixing a specific barrier polymer with a polyolefin and melt-molding the mixture. CONSTITUTION:A barrier polymer and a polyolefin are compounded in such a manner that the melt viscosity of the resulting polymer blend at a shear rate almost equal to the shear rate at an inner surface of a die in melt-molding satisfies the formula [wherein 0.35<=b<=0.60; V(A) is the vol. fraction of the barrier polymer; eta(A) and eta(B) are the melt viscosities of the barrier polymer and the polyolefin, respectively; and V(A), eta(A), and eta(B) are each a value obtd. at the same temp. as in melt molding] and that V(A) becomes 0.6 or lower. Both polymers are melt-mixed at a temp. higher than the softening points of the two and melt-molded to form a continuous network phase of the barrier polymer in a phase of the polyolefin. The barrier polymer is selected from the group consisting of a polyamide, polyester, saponified product of ethylene- vinyl acetate copolymer, polyvinylidene chloride, polycarbonate, PVC, polyketone, and polyacrylonitrile.
