Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain porous quartz glass having excellent mechanical strength and machineability by adding tetrahalide of Si or Ge to synthetic quartz powder essentially consisting of SiO2 and press-molding the same.

CONSTITUTION: The tetrahalide (e.g.; SiCl4) of Si or Ge is added to the synthetic quartz powder essentially consisting of SiO2 and thereafter the mixture is press- molded while the excess tetrahalide is squeezed to the outside of a mold to obtain the porous molding. The molding is ground and the resultant powder having 0.5W3mm grain size is again press-molded. The generation of cracks in the stage of machining by a lathe, etc. is thus obviated and the porous quartz glass which permits working with good accuracy is obtd.
