To obtain a washing machine employing an inverter motor in which an inertia rotation time of the motor can be reduced when power supply from an AC power supply is interrupted during the rotation of the motor, and the voltage of a DC power supply for driving the motor is prevented from rising.
Upon the interruption of power supply during the rotation of a motor 4, the motor 4 is controlled by an AC monitor 12 to perform a three-phase short circuit or regenerative operation, and a voltage of a capacitor 3 for driving the motor 4 is monitored by a voltage monitor 10. When the voltage lowers down to a predetermined level, the inertia rotation of the motor 4 is actuated by the control circuit 9 of an inverter 5 and power is regenerated from the motor 4 to the DC power supply. When the voltage rises to a predetermined level, a voltage of the capacitor 3 is lowered while braking the motor 4 by short-circuiting three phases thereof. The motor 4 is braked intermittently by repeating the operation, and the rotation of the motor 4 is stopped quickly.
