PURPOSE: To prevent a vehicle from being brought into accidental contact with another vehicle by forcibly setting steering back to a neutral point by the motor driven power steering device in a dangerous condition that the vehicle is approaching to any other vehicle when the vehicle is found to be steered to the direction that the vehicle is coming closer to the other vehicle, or when steering is started.

CONSTITUTION: When it is found that a vehicle is coming close to an obstacle, if a steering wheel is steered to the direction of the obstacle, for example, to the right, and when torque voltage TV exceeds the upper limit value of 3.1V for a range of play, an assist current value in the power steering device is made a minus value which is relatively so great as to generate supplemental force for steering to the left, after that, the current value is made a minus value again, which is so small as to generate supplemental force for steering to the right, and furthermore is made a minus value which is so small as to generate supplemental force for steering to the left. Therefore, change in an assist current value in three steps as mentioned above allows a steering wheel to be set back to a neutral point.
