In multi-branched granular organic/inorganic hybrid polymers in the form of sol-gel products possessing a basic structure of formula (1), X is 1-18 C alkylene or arylene, R₁-R₆ are chosen from hydrogen, 1-18 C alkyl, aryl, formyl, an aliphatic or aromatic carbonyl, carbamoyl, sulfonyl, sulfoxyl, phosphonyl, sulfinyl, and phosphinyl, or R₁-R₆ are selected from an acid, alcohol, phenol, amine, aldehyde, or condensation product or addition product of an epoxide.
