PURPOSE: To increase an allowance for polishing and to extend the life of rolls by providing a position adjusting means which supports freely rotatably a central backup roll to an eccentric shaft, rotates the eccentric shaft and holds the roll in the stage of changing the eccentric direction thereby changing a work roll with the roll of the larger diameter.
CONSTITUTION: The central backup roll 4 is set in the lower position where the center thereof is held at 4-1 and the condition α-β>0 is satisfied in the state in which the work roll 1 is assembled. A stopper key 8 is removed from a key way 10 and the eccentric shaft 5 is rotated 180° when the work roll 1 is changed with the work roll 1M of the larger diameter. The key 8 is then fitted into the other key way 10 to fix the shaft 5. As a result, the backup roll 4 is set in the upper position where the center thereof is held at 4-2. The condition αM-βM≥0 is thus satisfied and no adverse influence is exerted to the roll 4.
